Built in 1964, on the world’s largest man made small-craft harbor, the Marina del Rey Hotel is a California classic. It was the epicenter of famous parties and a celebrity hot spot, and continues to be visited by many.

Recently, the Marina del Rey Hotel celebrated its 50th Anniversary following the unveiling of a $25 million hotel renovation, which incorporates chic décor, modern amenities, and vintage photography – all complementing the hotel’s premier waterfront location.

The hotel and restaurant is the epitome of the Marina del Rey lifestyle. This captivating waterfront escape is laid-back, casual, yet chic.

“The new Marina Del Rey Hotel was designed not just to be a place of rest, but truly an experience from the moment you arrive. Whether you are an international guest staying for a week, or a local visiting for the day, you will be transported,” said Christina McCain Franklin, Corporate Lead Designer of the Marina Del Rey Hotel.

As you step into the 2-story atrium of the lobby, a flock of seagulls flies over you as you enter the corridor that leads to SALT.

A nautical theme is omnipresent throughout the property. As carpets mimic the flow of water, pale yellow hues and amber lamps pay homage to the first rays of the rising sun. Wooden finishes and vintage photographs of Marina Del Rey adorn the walls of SALT Restaurant. The pictures are reprints courtesy of the Marina del Rey Historical Society and Greg Wenger.

“SALT’s restaurant ambiance is modern, yet approachable. The interior design fuses a trendy setting with waterfront relaxation that is welcoming to restaurant guests, while also making them feel special,” said McCain.

The restaurant sits on a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and was inspired by the changing reflections of the sun as it moves throughout the day. McCain said that she wanted to bring the same elements indoors using custom lighting installations throughout the restaurant’s interior. Recently, SALT was named OpenTable Diner’s Choice for Best Ambiance and Outdoor Dining on the Westside.

“Behind the bar, we have mimicked the starry night sky. The hanging light fixtures over the communal tables, and the backlit wood carving screens, serve as a backdrop for every meal. We continued using the surroundings for inspiration incorporating wood-like tile to mimic boat decks and camel leathers with white trim for the classic yacht club feel.”

SALT is frequented by local Los Angeles Residents and world travelers. Jessica Alba, Torey Devitto, Vanessa Lengies and Cheryl Burke have been spotted there.

Executive Chef Mark Gold has created a cuisine that is inspired by the seasons. He works with products from local farms and Gourmet Imports, who source artisinal products and cheeses from small producers with exceptional quality.

“The octopus with caper berries and Spanish Chorizo is our most unique dish. With a diverse clientele, we like to keep things simple and approachable, but also have a number of unique flavors and choices for the more adventurous diner,” mentions the chef.

The cuisine is purely Californian with a contemporary twist. The most popular dish is the lobster pasta which features a 1.5 pound Maine Lobster, Japanese Udon noodles, Yuzu and brown butter. The perfect pairing is the Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc wine.

Craft cocktails range from the Mandarin Moscow Mule with muddled oranges to the seasonal Autumn Harvest which features applejack brandy, fresh lemon juice, house-made earl grey honey. For more traditional drinks, try the fresh White Sangria, a classic Manhattan, and plenty more that will entice your taste buds.
