If the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is the equestrian event for the fashion set, then yesterday’s VVVIP-filled affair was for the uppitiest of the upper class on theturnt up scale. This past Saturday, stylish lords and ladies (our host The Duke of Argyll, event hosts Lord Frederick Windsor and wife/actress Sophie Winkleman), socialites (actress Talulah Riley), and millionaires and billionaires from both sides of the pond (tech supergenius Elon Musk, indie film backer Cassian Elwes, to name a few) gathered in the Pacific Palisades for the inaugural British Polo Day at Will Rogers State Historic Park.  Charles & Company also partnered with British Polo Day

 

Indeed, the high-class affair was a true toast to the luxe lifestyle, but it wasn’t all just tea time, thrilling chukkas, fancy party dresses and, in the witty words of the event’s clever commentators, a “general backdrop of privileged people.” In addition to treating its elite English and Yankee guests to fine food, equine entertainment and top-shelf sips (Royal Salute Scotch Whisky and Taittinger bubbly, to name a few), the philanthropic afternoon also raised some serious cash for the Great Ormond Street Hospital and LA’s own Homeboy Industries.

First things first: the polo game. The U.S.’s Will Rogers Polo club (which included the club’s own president, Andrew Bossom) joined forces with patronage from Royal Salute, playing against the Eton Polo team. Sadly, the home team lost 6.5 goals to 4. Until next year!

Given that the Duke himself was our gracious host, we had a quick chat to press him on his other top-notch title as rep for luxe whisky brand, Royal Salute. (Not a big gig, right?) He tells us his drink of choice is “always in style—match-side as spectators enjoy a festive day out watching polo in a distinctive, quintessentially British nod to celebrating excellence or amongst the polo players as they ‘salute the game’ raising a dram of Royal Salute to celebrate the sportsmanship of both player and horse.” (We’re going to start referring to our glasses as “drams” from now on.)
But what about the Cali-meets-Brit fashion? Apparenlty, the Duke approves: “Hollywood met London style at British Polo Day; gentlemen looked very well turned out in relaxed suits or chinos and a dress shirt. Women looked lovely in longer length dresses—and the most desirable accessory of the day? Well that would have been the Royal Salute baseball cap or Royal Salute parasol! Failing that, a beautifully turned out polo pony was the other stylish accessory!” Someone get us a pony for our birthdays asap, please.
