1. Polo is an ancient sport that originated in China which was played by nomadic warriors. The first recorded polo match was played in 600 BC where the Turkomans beat the Persians.
2. Polo is played by 4 people on each team. A traditional polo field is 300 yards by 160 yards wide. Originally polo balls were made of wood but now they are made of plastic.
3. The modern game of Polo lasts for approximately 2 hours and divited into periods called chukkers.
4. You don’t need any horse riding experience to learn the sport.
5. Professional Polo player Ebe Sievwright hosts weekly polo lessons for all ages. You can learn how to play polo on Saturday or Sunday at the California Polo Club in Sylmar. Lessons cost $100 a session and include helmets and horses. All you need to do is wear jeans and a polo shirt!
6. Occasionally, Katty Wong organizes potluck polo where spectators watch a match with professional players and bring their favorite dish to be enjoyed by all. Champagne is always flowing and guests come dressed to impress. It is one of the few places in the Los Angeles area where this happens regularly.
7. After polo lessons are over, students participate in their own polo matches.
