Modern and contemporary art lovers, your time has come. Art Basel Hong Kong opens on March 29, 2018, and promises to be the premier art show of its kind in Asia. Art enthusiasts, collectors, galleries, and artists will gather at this prestigious and high profile event to see the latest developments in art from Asia and the world.

What to See

Hong Kong’s art scene has grown from nothing to the third-largest market in the world, falling only behind London and New York. While you can visit outposts of White Cube and Gagosian, the understated stars are the local galleries found in the South Island Cultural District, focusing on Hong Kong creativity.

Art Basel Hong Kong will feature 248 premier galleries from 32 countries and territories and, as part of Art Basel’s commitment to the region, half of the galleries have exhibition space in Asia and Asia-Pacific. An event highlight is ASIA ONE, gallery exhibitions focusing on a single artist of Asian origin. The event provides a platform that elevates Asian art. Hand-in-hand with ASIA ONE is ART FUTURES, which boosts young artists and galleries from around the world.

The Asia Contemporary Art Show is the largest show in Asia by the sheer number of pieces for sale — this year there are more than 3,000 works to choose from. Art Central is back for its third year and is housed right on the Central Harbourfront.

Where to Party

The official show may begin on March 29, but the best parties happen before the art is open to the public. You’ll know you’re a VIP when you receive an invitation to Art Central’s VIP Preview at the Central Harbourfront on Monday, March 26. If you’re lucky enough to be on this guest list, you’ll be mingling with the who’s who of Hong Kong’s art scene and get a first look at the show.

On the 27th, David Zwirner hosts a most exclusive party for a privileged few to socialize with a handful of artists he represents. Word on the street is that Jeff Koons and Wolfgang Tillmans will both make an appearance.

On Wednesday, the art scene will all be eagerly attending the Hong Kong Tatler x The Artling Art Party. The invite-only event will be held on the rooftop of The Murray, Hong Kong’s newest five-star hotel, and will feature live tattoos by Maxime Buchi.
