THE HOLISTIC HAWAIIAN SPA EXPERIENCE: THE OLAVINE SPA.

The Olavine Spa (link) is a boutique spa and salon located in the quaint city of Wailea. Perched on the 2nd floor, it is a popular destination for world travelers and locals alike.

Olavine Spa

The word ‘Olavine’ is inspired by the Hawaiian word “ola” which means life and health and the English word, olivine,  an enchanting lava mineral said to have properties of calmness peacefulness and joy.

This comes from the age-old tale where it was recognized as a Hawaiian diamond, or the joyful tears of Madame Pele, the fire goddess. It is found on the green sand beach of the Big Island and outside of Hawaii, in Galapagos, Guam and Norway.

At the Olavine Spa, gem and crystal elixirs are used, revered and enjoyed to create a sense of relaxation harmony and balance. An olivine crystal is considered the most natural gem and relieves anxiety, depression and also protects you…but beware, do not take one from the island when you leave, or you will be cursed with bad luck. If you choose to wear this crystal, they are sold here at the spa but imported from other regions, not Hawaii.

When you walk into the Olavine Spa, you will notice the serene colors of aqua and green which represent the Hawaiian waters and greenery. A misty scent of Eucalyptus flows through the air as you are surrounded by jewelry and holistic products including the eco-chic Mahalo skincare line that is exclusively available here at the spa.

The relaxation room has a gorgeous palm tree view and on clear days, you will see the island of Kaho’olawe in the distance. Upon arrival, you will be invited to sit on plus white couches with green accent pillows. Greensand from the big island and a bowl of olivines are presented to you as you hear the story of the concept of the salon. We had a chance to speak with Ivana, one of the spa owners. Let’s see what she had to say.

Destination Luxury: What oils and products are used in the massage treatment?

Ivana: For aromatherapy, we use  Island Essence –  the Aromatherapy Oil has the core ingredients of Organic Coconut Oil infused with olivine crystals, Hawaiian Harvested Wild Kukui Nut Oil, Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Oil, Big Island Kamani (Tamanu) Nut Oil, and Organic Sunflower Oil.

The health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect the scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems. Eucalyptus oil is known for being anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating, and other medicinal qualities.

Destination Luxury: What oils and products are used in the facial treatment?

Ivana: We Use Mahalo Skin Care and Rhonda Allison.

  • Apricot Kernel Oil: Light and nourishing, and excellent for dry or mature skin (over age 35)
  • Camellia Oil:  The most versatile and can be used for any skin type.
  • Grape Seed Oil:  Non greasy, and does a terrific job of prepping the skin for massage.
  • Jojoba Oil:  A golden, liquid wax, and another type suitable for most skin.
  • Sweet Almond Oil:  Nourishes dry and damaged skin. Not one for allergy-prone individuals.

Then you’ll need to add one or more essential oils:

  • Geranium:  Balances and hydrates oily and combination skin types.
  • Grapefruit:  Tones and detoxifies all skin types.
  • Lavender:  Tones combination, oily and acne-prone skin.  Also good for sensitive skin.
