We all have an inner hunger to explore new territories and different cultures, so go ahead and add some wanderlust-worthy cities to this year’s travel itinerary!
5. Mumbai, India
Book a flight to Mumbai on Expedia and you won’t regret it. This densely populated metropolitan city was once known as Bombay. It hugs the west coast of India and is home to the largest financial hub. Many Bollywood movies have been shot in Mumbai, which is located in close proximity to Elephanta Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site speckled with rock-carved temples. Within the city itself, you can expect to see a large art and history museum called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, as well as children’s attraction EsselWorld, Kamala Nehru Park and a magnificent meditation hall where people congregate to honor the Buddha, better known as the Global Vipassana Pagoda.
4. Gothenburg, Sweden
Positioned on the west coast of Sweden, just off the Göta älv river, is a magnificent city called Gothenburg. Known around the world for its blooming boulevards and canals, of which represents Dutch-style architecture, Gothenburg is a prominent seaport. The city is brimmed with entertainment venues, theme parks, and jaw-dropping landscaped gardens. Take a seat inside one of its cozy cafes to feast on local delicacies, such as Knäckebröd (crispbread) and Toscakaka (almond caramel cake). Some of Gothenburg’s major attractions include Liseberg Amusement Park, the Southern Archipelago and Gothenburg Botanical Garden.
3. Lyon, France
A charming city is blessed to be positioned in the area where the Rhône and Saône rivers cross. That city’s name is Lyon, and it is a French city like no other. As the capital of France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Lyon is well-known, to locals at least. Tourists are intrigued by medieval and Renaissance architecture and enticed by Lyon’s ancient influences, of which are reflected in the nucleus of the city’s top sights, including Place Bellecour, Lyon Cathedral, and Vieux Lyon, which is the city’s biggest Renaissance district. Equally as mesmerizing is the natural beauty that can be seen at Parc de la Tete d’Or and the Grand Parc Miribel Jonage.
2. Helsinki, Finland
The southern capital of Finland, Helsinki is steeped in Finnish history that dates all the way back to the Stone Age! Located in the Gulf of Finland, the peninsula-perched city is home to an affluence of prominent buildings, including harbor-facing Uspenski Cathedral, the Parliament House of Finland, Finlandia Hall and the National Museum of Finland. You’ll find the National Library of Finland and the University of Helsinki in Helsinki Senate Square. The Seurassari Open-air Museum sits on an island in the Helsinki region where you can admire time worn Finnish cottages.
1. Porto, Portugal
Another under-visited wanderlust-worthy city that you should hit if you want an ocean vacation is Porto. With its cobblestone streets, ancient architecture and elaborate decoration, this city in Portugal’s northwestern lands is as pretty as it is interesting. The neighborhood is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also home to cultural attractions like the Contemporary Art Museum, Café Majestic, World of Discoveries and Arrábida Bridge, which is worth climbing to catch the ruby-red sunset.
