Movie: In the second part of our interview with Voon Wong of VW+BS, the Inside Festival 2014 judge discusses his studio’s upper-class bar and cabin for airline Virgin Atlantic (link).
“The bar is at the point where you enter the plane in Virgin Atlantic,” says Wong. “We angled it so that it’s the first thing you see. They call it the longest bar in the sky, because it is angled. We wanted to have that visual impact when you come in.”
The bar was designed for Airbus A330 planes and has been flying with Virgin Atlantic for two years on routes to New York, India and the Caribbean.
As well as the bar itself, VW+BS also designed the stools and cabin interior. Wong says that his studio approached the project as a small piece of self-contained architecture.
“It’s basically a little cabin within the aeroplane cabin, a little piece of architecture as it were,” he says. “We wanted to make sure that there is no noise pollution to the passengers at the front.”
He continues: “I don’t see any differentiation between architecture and interior design. I think it is pretty much the same animal. The problems that arise in architecture will arise in interior design as well.”
“I think a good interior designer will be able to organise the space will be able to solve the problems but within the walls rather than exteriorly.”
